VALVE ADJUSTING

Parameters for adjusting valves:

Valve Clearance for For 8 Valve Engines (Between Valve Stem & Adjusting Screw)
    Intake Side:
        Cold: 0.005 - 0.007in. (0.13 - 0.17mm.)
          Hot: 0.009 - 0.011in. (0.23 - 0.27mm.)
    Exhahaust Side:
        Cold: 0.006 - 0.008in. (0.16 - 0.20mm.)
          Hot: 0.010 - 0.012in. (0.26 - 0.30mm)

Valve Clearance for 16 Valve Engines (Between CAM and Face of Rocker-Arm)
    Both Intake & Exhaust Side:
        Cold: 0.005 - 0.007in. (0.13 - 0.17mm.)
          Hot: 0.007 - 0.008in. (0.17 - 0.21mm.)

Intake side is, of course, where the intake manifold, and the exahust side is where the exhaust manifold is bolted to the
right side of the engine.

PROCEEDURE:

First, you will need to buy another valve cover gasket.  Do not reuse the current one!

1. Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating tempurature, then thut the engine off.
2. Remove the valve-cover (also known as cam-shaft cover).
(This means removing any items in thw way of the cover; plenum, plug wires. . .)
3. Bring piston #1 to Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke.
4. Make sure all the rocker arm(s) for the #1 cylinder are loose, and number #4(s) are tight, if they aren't, then #1 is not
at TDC on the compression stroke.
5. For 8v engines, adjust both valves for #1, intake side for #2, and exhaust side for #3
For 16v engines, adjust all four valves for #1, intake side only for #2, and exhaust side only for #3
6. Turn crank 360 degress (#4 TDC on compression stroke), and adjust all remaining valves, exhaust side #2, intake side #3,
    all for #4

Once you are completed, replace the cover (with new gasket), and replace all other parts removed.

To adjust for 8v engines - Loosen the nut (2) on top of the rocker arm.  Place the feeler guage between the adjust screw, and the valve stem.  Tighten the screw (3) until it hits the feeler guage (if you can let go of the guage, and it stays in without falling out, the screw is tight enough).  Once the clearance has been set, hold the screw while tightening the nut.  Valve adjustment for that valve is complete.

To adjust for 16v engines - A special tool (2) (Suzuki 09917 - 18210 or equivalent) is required to adjust and tighten the locknuts for the rocker arms, because they are difficault to reach.  However, if you have the tool, place the feeler guage (1) between the face of the rocker arm, and the cam lobe. Once you adjust, you are done with that valve.

Always check the clearance again one the adjustment is made.  Sometimes the screw will move while tightening the locknuts.  This gives you less clearance, and can cause damage to the valves or cam lobes.
