EMISSIONS CONTROL SYSTEMS

#1 - Fuel Evaporative Emissions Control System - F.I. models

1. Throttle Body 4. Vapor/Liquid Separator
2. Charcoal Canister 5. Fuel Tank
3. Two-Way Check Valve 6. Fresh Air
This system is to help prevent Hydrocarbons from being released into the air, by trapping the fuel vapors from the fuel tank,  carb., TBI, or MPFI system.

Do you smell gas under the hood, but there are no gas leaks (verified).  Then usually the Charcoal canister has outlived its usefullness, so replace it.

The canister is connected to a solenoid that (which is normally closed).  When the engine is started, it is opened to intake the the vapors that are stored in the canister, through a special port on the carb. TBI, or MPFI unit.  On F.I. models, this system is in operation continually while the engine is running, and there is no solenoid valve.
